MISTAKES HAPPEN

“Constitution Pipeline would cut a swath through the Robert V. Riddell State Park in Otsego County — a wilderness sanctuary that the daughter of the man for whom the park is named said should be off-limits to such a project.” When asked why the Williams Partners’ engineers placed a stretch of Route M. through the Robert V. Riddell Park, Williams Partners, their representative explained that the planners were utilizing an “outdated map that did not show the park.” ( OOPS. Sorry. We made a mistake.)
We hear it all the time. We know that to be human is to make mistakes. No doubt, if you have children, you have consoled them with similar words. And yet not one of us would use these words to dismiss behavior that allows the same mistakes to continue. It is common wisdom that we must LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES so that we may avoid them in the future. It is the very mark of intelligence. Learn and grow.

And yet, we also know that to be human is to be greedy and ignore history if it favors present need or more aptly, greed.

MISTAKES HAPPEN

FERC, is now hearing from thousands of local New York and Pennsylvania residents, and businesses who oppose the Pipeline. They are accepting comments regarding the scope of the project, and what should be included in their scope of work. Unfortunately, the dollars involved in this project will speak louder than all these voices combined. It is all too clear that present financial gain, promised but far from guaranteed, is shaping many opinions, (including yours?). The future of our lives, our children’s lives is not being considered.

As President Bill Clinton recently said, “The future has never had a big enough constituency – those fighting for present gain almost always win out.”

MISTAKES HAPPEN

The historical record in regards to the mistakes of the two companies involved in the Constitution Pipeline is among the worst in the oil and gas industry. A simple Google search of the words “Cabot Oil and Gas, mistakes” returns over 36 million search results; and a search for “Williams pipeline mistakes” returns over 44 million search results. These two companies have a lot to answer for. FERC has a huge role in scoping out this pipeline project in such a way that the mistakes of the past are not repeated. EVER.
And yet, before the project even is fully underway…Williams and Cabot have already blundered into the abyss of “Oops!” with Robert V. Riddell Park by using 5 year old maps of the region to map out the requested alternative Route ‘M’.  Williams and Cabot cannot even map a project without making mistakes. What will come when they actually need to weld a pipe? Pour concrete? Drive trucks? Dispose of toxic fluids?

Recently, $1.6 million dollars was awarded to three families who lost their water due to gas related mistakes in Pennsylvania. That figure sounds a like a good settlement for poor families affected by a mistake, but really, after you deduct attorney’s fees, divide by three and pay off medical bills and other related expenses, it is nothing.

MISTAKES HAPPEN

The roads around pipeline construction are notoriously dangerous. A recent report in Pennsylvania cites a woman who lost her arm in a pipeline construction truck accident.

MISTAKES HAPPEN

Everyone says gas production is safe" if done properly." The last phrase is the key. Casing failure is real. Mistakes are made. Human error is inevitable. "Still, it only takes one small hole, or one faulty piece of equipment, or one weak chunk of cement, to create problems on the surface.” http://www.npr.org/2012/08/28/160128351/methane-making-an-appearance-in-pa-water-supplies

MISTAKES HAPPEN

As has been said:
"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results."

Hey FERC, include in your scoping the very real records of Williams and Cabot. Include their all-to-numerous mistakes. Take into account that these mistakes will cost lives. How can you “scope” the life of one person? That is your job. It is not to be taken lightly.

MISTAKES HAPPEN

NOTE: Interestingly, by comparison, “FERC mistakes” returns only 158 thousand search results.
Please do not make that 158,001!
